6 Skincare Mistakes to Avoid Making in Your Routine

Acne, blemishes, hyperpigmentation, and dryness are some things we try to steer clear of when it comes to our skin. It’s safe to say that everyone wants beautiful, healthy skin. What could be better than that? Unfortunately, there are skincare mistakes you can make that will keep you from achieving the skin you desire.

I know I’m guilty of some of the mistakes I’ll be discussing in this post, but the good news is they can easily be fixed!

Skincare Mistakes to Avoid

Not Wearing Sunscreen

I didn’t wear sunscreen for years because I was under the impression that it wasn’t a necessity unless I was going outside for a long period. Ha, I also thought that black people didn’t need to wear sunscreen. Of course, that’s a lie!

Sunscreen is the most important step in your morning routine. No matter how long you’re exposed to the sun, your skin is always at risk if it’s not protected.

Not applying sunscreen is one skincare mistake that needs to be fixed as soon as possible! Many issues such as hyperpigmentation, acne, and wrinkles can be reduced by wearing sunscreen regularly, and those are concerns we all want to avoid right?

Black Girl Sunscreen

My favorite sunscreen is Black Girl Sunscreen. I’ve been using this for a few years and I love that it doesn’t leave a white cast and absorbs easily. I know that’s a concern for many people and the reason they don’t like wearing it. It also has all-natural ingredients which is another plus!


Don’t get me wrong, exfoliating your skin regularly is important and has many benefits, however, you want to make sure you’re not overdoing it and causing more harm than good. I exfoliate 2-3 times per week! You want to make sure you watch out for this mistake because over-exfoliating can damage your skin barrier.

Your skin barrier serves as protection and prevents your skin from drying out since it holds moisture. Here are some signs you may notice if you over-exfoliate:

  • Excessive dryness
  • Irritation + redness
  • Hypersensitive skin
  • Small bumps

Using Too Many Products

You always hear people say “the more, the better”, but that’s not necessarily true when it comes to skincare. Yes, there are plenty of products to choose from and you want to take care of as many skincare concerns as you can at once. If a product says it can help with everything you’re struggling with, why not add it to your lineup? That’s what my mindset used to be until I experienced the worst breakout.

Although I started paying attention to the ingredients in my beauty products, I was still using too many and switching up my routine every day. I had a bunch of dark spots pop up and broke out on my cheeks and along my jawline.

That’s when I realized it wasn’t the type of products I was using, it was how many. Your routine doesn’t have to be complicated and there’s no need to switch up your products whenever you wash your face. It’s best to find what works and stick to that.

Whenever I do want to try something new, I add one product at a time so that I’m able to pinpoint which one caused an issue if I experience irritation. I also recommend patch testing if you have sensitive skin as I do!

Using the Wrong Cleanser

It seems like it took me forever to find the right cleanser for my face. This is one step in my routine that I don’t change frequently because looking for a good cleanser is difficult.

A lot of people make this skincare mistake because they aren’t using the best cleanser for their skin type. For example, some people with oily skin may use harsh cleansers because they’re trying to get rid of the excessive oil. However, these types of cleansers usually strip the skin of its natural oils which leads to the production of more oil.

When it comes to choosing the right cleanser, you want to take the ingredients and your skin type into consideration. I stay away from any products that contain sulfates, parabens, and other harmful ingredients. No matter what your skin type is, I recommend finding a gentle cleanser with safe ingredients.

One of my favorites is the Whipped Cleanser from Skin & Co. It always leaves my face fresh, moisturized, and soft. I never have to worry about that squeaky feeling or my face feeling tight and uncomfortable. I highly recommend this cleanser if you haven’t been able to find one yet.

Popping Pimples

I see you in the mirror eyeing that pimple and you’re ready to squeeze it. Stop it! I have to tell myself this whenever I notice a breakout on my face. I’ve always been guilty of picking my skin and popping pimples, therefore, it caused a lot of issues I dealt with in the past.

It can be difficult to resist the urge to pop them, however, it’s best to leave them alone. Popping a pimple can lead to more breakouts and it’ll also leave dark spots behind which are hard to get rid of. It took me a long time to get rid of hyperpigmentation that came from messing with acne.

Sleeping With Makeup On

I know sis. Sometimes you don’t have the energy to go to the bathroom and take your makeup off. However, this is another mistake that could be causing a setback in your routine. I recommend double cleansing to get rid of all traces of makeup and dirt from your day. I was introduced to double cleansing last year and it has been a game-changer. My skin always feels refreshed and clean whenever I finish this step.

When you double cleanse, you want to use an oil cleanser or balm first, then you follow up with your water-based cleanser.

I also recommend using Fresh Face Makeup Remover Towels from QVC. I love using these to remove as much makeup as I can before using my cleansers. Ever since I started using these, I haven’t had an issue with anything being left behind on my skin. They’re very gentle and all you have to do is dampen the towel and wipe off your makeup!

Keep these skincare mistakes in mind and avoid making them in your routine. It’s possible to achieve healthy, clear skin with consistency and keeping your routine simple. Don’t let skincare become a hassle because it doesn’t have to be!

    I was a culprit of sleeping with makeup on. I use the Farmacy Green Clean Cleansing Balm now. That was really a lot of trouble with my skin.
