Have you ever heard people say you shouldn’t use shampoos for natural hair? Why wouldn’t I use something that is meant to remove product build-up and dirt? A clean scalp leads to healthy hair growth— dirty hair will get you nowhere.=
One thing I’ve seen many complain about is how shampoo leaves their hair feeling stripped and dry. I hate that squeaky feeling as much as anyone else, however, you can’t expect to properly cleanse your hair and scalp if you skip out on this step. Using co-washes is a great alternative, but you can’t rely solely on them because it’ll lead to more harm than good in the long run.
Here are a few things I do in my routine to prevent my shampoo from leaving my hair stripped:
- Pre-poo the night before
- Follow up with a rinse-out conditioner
- Deep condition every wash day
In this post, I want to share 6 shampoos for natural hair that have helped get my curls + scalp nice and clean without drying it out or causing irritation. I still recommend doing a pre-poo treatment and following up with conditioners.
Shampoos for Natural Hair
Luxe Locks Curls African Black Soap
One of the first shampoos for natural hair I recommend is the African Black Soap from a small brand called Luxe Locks Curls. I love using this when I need to clarify my hair. Although it’s perfect for removing product build-up, it won’t leave your hair stripped.
Here are some benefits of using African Black Soap in your natural hair routine:
- Contains moisturizing properties
- Promotes softness + manageability
- Alleviates itching + dandruff
- Provides healing benefits
- Promotes healthy hair growth
Her shampoo comes as a liquid and has an applicator tip which makes it easier to reach the scalp. A little goes a long way and the lather is amazing! I don’t know about you, but I love when my shampoos lather really well. It makes me feel like my hair is getting properly cleansed!
I only use this once a month in my regimen when I need to give my curls a fresh start. Using it every week may give a different result, remember everyone’s hair is different!
Ingredients: African Black Soap, Shea Butter, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Peppermint, & Lavender Essential Oil

Nature’s Little Secret Cucumber Shampoo
When I first heard about a cucumber shampoo, I was excited. I’ve never used any products with this ingredient and could only imagine how it would smell. This has become a staple in my routine and it hasn’t disappointed!
Cucumbers are great for providing hydration since they’re rich in water content. They also soothe scalp conditions and provide nutrients that help promote healthy hair growth. I knew I loved eating them, however, I didn’t know how beneficial it would be in my regimen!
This is a great shampoo because it provides a gentle cleanse without leaving your hair stripped. Instead, you can expect moisture, softness, and hair that smells good on top of that.
Ingredients: Cucumber Juice, Aloe Vera Juice, Camelina Seed Oil, Vitamin E, Coconut Oil
Chocolate Kinks & Kurls Clay Washes
I’ve been using clay washes since my transitioning days and they have been a game-changer. Using clay on your natural hair will help you detox, lift dirt + oil from your hair, remove product build-up, and provide conditioning effects. Some clays that are popular to use are Bentonite and Rhassoul.
Chocolate Kinks & Kurls has been my go-to for pre-made clay washes. Sometimes you don’t feel like mixing up your DIY. It’s great to have a product you can quickly reach for on wash day. She has a variety of clay washes to choose from such as:
- Bentonite Clay
- Rhassoul Clay
- Aloha Rose Clay
- Green Clay & Mint
- Red Clay & Hibiscus
Here is a video showing how well the clay wash works for me! This will leave your curls extremely soft and manageable throughout your wash day!
Ingredients: Shea Butter, Aloe Vera, Jojoba Oil, Babassu Oil, Avocado Oil

Dominican Curly Luna Rose Bar
If you haven’t tried shampoo bars yet, you’re missing out! Shampoo bars are created to remove product build-up and leave your hair moisturized + soft. They’re packed with nourishing ingredients and oils that’ll benefit the overall health of your hair and scalp.
Here are more benefits of using shampoo bars:
- Lasts longer than bottled shampoo
- More convenient + easier to use
- Environmentally conscious (eco-friendly)
- Contains all-natural ingredients
- Doesn’t take up a lot of space
Dominican Curly is a brand I’ve been supporting for awhile now. I love her Ayurvedic oil and Hibiscus Hair tea— I was super excited when I heard she was coming out with a shampoo bar. It’s a great cleanser for all hair types, provides an amazing lather, and will leave your curls moisturized, strengthened, and nourished.
Ingredients: Coconut Oil, Mango Butter, Aloe Vera Gel, Shikakai, Rose Petal, Oat Protein, Lemongrass + Sage Essential Oils
Pardo Naturals Rice Water + ACV Bar
Another great shampoo bar is from Pardo Naturals. Their Rice Water + ACV Shampoo bar not only is a great cleanser for your hair, but it’s also safe to use on your body. I love it when a product is multipurpose.
The two ingredients in this shampoo bar: Rice Water and Apple Cider Vinegar provide many benefits for natural hair. Rice Water helps detangle, improve elasticity, and strengthen your hair. ACV can be used to clarify your hair which means it’s perfect for removing product build-up and alleviating scalp issues such as itchiness and dandruff.
One tip I have for using shampoo bars is to cut them into small pieces. This is a great way to ensure the product lasts for months. If you continue to run the entire shampoo bar underneath the water, it’ll dissolve faster and you won’t get your money’s worth. After I cut mine into pieces, I keep the rest in a ziplock bag.
If you’re looking for affordable, long-lasting shampoos for natural hair, make sure you try these bars I mentioned!
Ingredients: Rice Water, Apple Cider Vinegar, Bentonite Clay, Peppermint Essential Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Shea Butter, Castor Oil, Coconut Oil

Discover Treluxe Curl Renew & Restore
I fell in love with Discover Treluxe products last year and one of my favorites from their collection is the Curl Renew & Restore Gentle Cleanser. It’s formulated with plant-based cleansing ingredients that’ll gently lift build-up and dirt without disturbing the natural pH balance of your hair.
Here are some benefits of using this shampoo:
- Increases curl elasticity
- Improve hair flexibility
- Hydrates the hair
- Provides strength
- Improves hair texture + softness
I love how well this lathers and it leaves my hair and scalp refreshed. When you find good shampoos for natural hair that provide moisture, protection, and shine, keep it in rotation forever.
Ingredients: Slippery Elm, Coconut Milk, Aloe Vera Juice, Squalene, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Tomato Fruit Extract, Rice Extract, Keratin Amino Acids
There’s nothing wrong with using a co-wash here and there to add moisture to your hair, however, you need a good cleanse regularly. You want to ensure product build-up is removed from your hair because it can impact how your styles turn out and can stunt growth. If you want to improve the health of your curls and start seeing inches down your back, shampoo your hair!
Shampoos for natural hair aren’t as bad as people make it seem. If they leave your hair feeling dry, you can follow up with a rinse-out conditioner and/or deep conditioner. Double conditioning has always worked for me and it does a great job at adding moisture.
Dirty hair doesn’t grow. Don’t let anyone fool you!
