The Best Natural Gels to Use for a Wash and Go

July 13, 2020

The first style I mastered when I returned natural was a wash and go. I had always been excited to try it — who wouldn’t want to run their hair underneath the water and achieve juicy, defined curls?

Unfortunately, it wasn’t as easy as I expected. The name of this style was misleading because it requires more steps!

One product that’s a must for my wash and go is a gel. Gels are perfect to use when you’re looking for a sleek look, laid edges, or hold for your curls.

Although achieving a wash and go is possible without a gel, it’s a necessity for some because it’ll help your style last longer and curls stay defined.

In this post, I’m sharing some of the best natural hair gels to use for your wash and go styles that won’t cause flakes or scalp irritation!

Gels for Wash and Go’s

Nature’s Little Secret Flaxseed Gel

Nature's Little Secret has a great gel to use for a wash and go.

It’s no surprise that I’m mentioning another product from Nature’s Little Secret. If you follow me on Instagram, then you’ve seen for yourself how well her products work for me!

One of my favorite gels to use for a wash and go is their Flaxseed Curly Custard.

When I first tried this, I was skeptical because it was lightweight. I didn’t think it would provide enough hold for my curls, but I was wrong!

Not only does this smell delicious, but it also helps me achieve a long-lasting, defined wash and go style.

Flaxseeds are amazing for our natural hair. They’re rich in omega-3 fatty acids which are perfect for nourishing the hair and preventing it from drying out. They also contain nutrients that lead to healthy hair growth and stronger strands.

Here are some ingredients in this gel:

  • Marshmallow Root
  • Slippery Elm
  • Aloe Vera Juice
  • Agave Nectar
  • Comfrey Root

TréLuxe Styling Gel

Another great gel for a wash and go is the Hi Definition Styling Gel from Discover Treluxe.

TreLuxe is another brand I recommend trying when you want to achieve a defined wash and go.

Their Hi-Definition Curl Enhancer Styling Gel paired with their Untie the Knot Leave-In Conditioner will have your curls moisturized, bouncy, and shiny!

Many gels are known to provide hold, however, this will also help you maintain moisture.

The Hi-Definition Gel is infused with Avocado, Sage, and Honey Extracts and provides a medium-to-high hold.

Here are more ingredients in this product:

  • Aloe Vera Juice
  • Seaweed Extract
  • Tomato Extract
  • Keratin Amino Acids
  • ProVitamin B5

Nefertiti’s Secret Curl Definer

Another gel to use for a wash and go is the Aloe & Moringa Oil Gel from Nefertiti's Secret.

The Aloe & Moringa Oil Curl Definer is another gel to use for a wash and go.

It’s all-natural, provides lasting hold, defines your curls, and can stimulate healthy hair growth.

Here are more benefits of using this:

  • Alcohol-free + non-flaking
  • Reduces frizz
  • Enhances shine
  • Provides medium-hold

I love that it comes in a 16oz container. It’ll last for a long time and you don’t need to apply much to your hair!

I recommend pairing this with their Hydration Conditioner for the best results. When I used this combo, I enjoyed the definition it helped me achieve.

More ingredients:

  • Aloe Vera Juice
  • Sage Leaf Extract
  • Rosemary Leaf Extract
  • Nettle
  • Moringa Oil

My Soigné Flaxseed Gel

My Soigne Flaxeed Gel

My Soigné’s Flaxseed Gel is another product you should add to your list.

We already spoke about the benefits flaxseeds provide for natural hair, therefore, it’s no surprise that I also had to give this product a try.

The first time I used it, I did a one-product wash and go and my curls came out soft, defined, + moisturized!

Since I have high porosity hair, I was surprised that I was only able to use her flaxseed gel for a wash and go. It lasted a week and I didn’t have to worry about flaking!

This is thicker than the previous gel I mentioned, however, it will provide you with the strong hold you need.

Here are more ingredients:

  • Aloe Vera Juice
  • Panthenol
  • Lavender Oil
  • Vitamin E

Uncle Funky’s Curly Magic

Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic

The last gel I recommend using for a wash and go is Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curly Magic.

The word “Magic” in the name of this product fits perfectly with the type of results you achieve after using it.

I visit my stylist once a year to get a professional trim and this is one product she uses to style my wash and go. She’s the reason why I decided to purchase it for myself!

I know I’ll achieve a long-lasting, defined, moisturized style when using this gel.

Wash and go results from using Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic.

Curly Magic is aloe-based and provides a firm hold for your curls without the crunchy feeling once it dries.

It has the following benefits:

  • Tames frizz
  • Elongates curls
  • Adds moisture
  • Stimulates curls

There’s a reason why I recommend this gel for a wash and go — you won’t be disappointed once you give this a try. You can use it alone or pair it with another product of your choice!

Wash and go on type 4 natural hair using Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic.

Ingredients in this gel:

  • Organic Aloe Vera Juice
  • Marshmallow Extracts
  • Chamomile
  • Nettle & Horsetail
  • Agave Nectar Extract

Have you tried any of these gels for a wash and go yet? Which one is your favorite? What other gels do you recommend and love?

You always put us up on game with the hair care products. I was looking for a hair gel or gels for my hair because the one I was using low key was giving me a headache. Thank you for sharing your reviews and knowledge.
