In a previous post on the blog, we talked about tips every woman should follow when it comes to maintaining good feminine hygiene. Practicing good hygiene and living a healthier lifestyle can have a positive impact on your vaginal health. As a woman, I’m sure that’s what we’re all aiming for!
Even though there are certain tips you should follow, there are also feminine hygiene mistakes you could be making that can cause imbalances and uncomfortable situations with your lady parts.
We will be discussing some of the biggest mistakes women can make with their feminine hygiene. You want to ensure you’re looking out for these unhealthy practices and put an end to them immediately if they are part of your routine.
Top Feminine Hygiene Mistakes to Avoid
Wearing Silk/Satin Underwear
One of the biggest feminine hygiene mistakes you could be making is wearing silk or satin, non-breathable underwear. Even though you’ll find pretty pairs you want to purchase, it’s important to remember that those types of underwear can retain a lot of moisture, which isn’t a good thing!
If your underwear is non-breathable, this is the perfect environment for yeast and other bacteria to grow, which in turn, leads to a variety of possible infections. Bacteria love warm, moist environments; and no one has time to deal with that! So, you know what the best thing for you to do is?
Look for underwear with a cotton crotch!
You can still purchase your cute underwear, however, you want to make sure it’s made from breathable, cotton fabric. Wearing cotton underwear can ensure your lady parts remain cool and dry throughout the day.
One of my favorite stores to purchase cute underwear from is Soma. They usually have great deals for their panties and have a variety of styles to choose from whether you’re looking for boy shorts, high-waisted underwear, or hipsters. Make sure you check them out!
Using Irritating Soaps or Body Washes
Your vagina is self-cleaning, so nothing needs to be done to the inside of it. However, it’s important to ensure you regularly wash the outside area with warm water AND soap daily. Another feminine hygiene mistake you can make is using scented soaps or body washes to clean your vaginal area.
The vagina has a healthy pH range of 3.5 to 4.5. Sometimes this can get thrown off when we use certain soaps that contain harmful ingredients or fragrances. Using those types of soaps can alter your pH balance which can lead to bacteria, yeast, or even urinary tract infections.

When taking your bath/shower, you want to use warm water and an unscented soap to properly clean yourself. One brand I was a huge fan of years ago is Summer’s Eve; I used their products for my feminine hygiene routine for the longest. Now that I look back, I can understand why it caused so many issues!
I’ve tried many feminine hygiene products and here are some of my favorite ones:
Disclaimer: These have worked for ME. Remember that just because it works for me doesn’t mean it’ll do the same for you. You can try these recommendations at your own risk and do more research before using them:
- Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Castile Soap
- Authentic Vibrations Cooty Cat Shower Gel
- Chocolate Kinks & Kurls Her Bar
- The Honey Pot Sensitive Feminine Wash
- Fab You Life Lotus Soap
Even though these products contain all-natural ingredients, I wouldn’t recommend alternating them every night when you take a shower. I stick to one cleanser at a time and then move on to the next one when it’s needed.
Wearing Tight Pants
I don’t know about you, but I love wearing skinny jeans! I’m pretty sure you wear them too. The next mistake we’re going to talk about is wearing tight pants all the time. When your jeans are too tight, not only are they uncomfortable, but this can increase the risk of bacterial or yeast infections. Remember, bacteria love to be in an environment that’s warm and moist, what better place than your tight pants?
Don’t be afraid to go up a size if you notice your pants fitting too tight. Yes, I know you love those tight jeans so you can show more of your booty. But, what would you rather have: An
Trust me, I used to wear tight pants all the time. I needed all of my curves showing! It’s not worth it though! You want to make sure you’re keeping your vaginal health in mind because this can have a negative impact on it.

Wearing Your Pad/Tampon Too Long
I’m sure we all hate when that time of the month comes, it’s time to pull out those pads or tampons, whichever you prefer to wear. Another feminine hygiene mistake you could make is not changing your pad or tampon frequently throughout the day. How often you need to change your period products depends on how heavy your flow is and how absorbent your pads/tampons are.
It’s important to change your pad or tampon as you continue through your day. After doing more research, it’s recommended that you change them every 4-6. hours, why is that? As we discussed before, bacteria thrive in warm, moist areas. While you’re on your cycle, you don’t want to end up with an odor because of bacteria in your blood, isn’t that nasty? Yep!
Changing out your period products will not only help you feel refreshed, but it will also prevent odor and accidental leaks from happening. Make sure you always carry extra pads/tampons with you because you never know how often you’ll have to change. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
You’re Wiping Yourself too Hard
We already know the basics: wipe from front to back after finishing your business. However, it’s also important that you don’t wipe yourself too rough. There are times where we may clean ourselves too harshly, and unfortunately, this can cause small cuts and irritations if you’re not careful.
You want to be as gentle as you can with your most sensitive part. Use soft tissue and take your time when wiping yourself. Some even recommend dabbing instead of swiping, do whatever works for you but be mindful about how hard you’re doing it!
You Don’t Switch Out Your Razors
This is for all the women who still shave, we’re still out here and you’re not alone! A feminine hygiene mistake you can make is reusing a dull razor blade while shaving. If you shave frequently, you want to ensure the blade is fresh so you can remove your hair smoothly. It’s important to change out your razor after using it a few times.
Using dull razor blades can cause razor bumps, irritation, ingrown hairs, and cuts. There’s also a chance that the blade will harbor bacteria once it has been used a certain amount of time. This can lead to infections and irritate your vaginal area.
According to Google, some women say using a razor up to 10 times before replacing it is good. However, I don’t wait that long. It all depends on how often you shave and how the blade feels. I love keeping backups on hand just in case I need to switch it out sooner than I expected.
