Lipstick has recently become my favorite beauty product. I went years thinking wearing lipstick wasn’t “for me”, but now I’m glad I stepped outside of my comfort zone and gave them a try. So far, I’ve tried a variety of bold, bright lipsticks and fell in love with them!
You know I’m all for clean beauty products and my standards haven’t changed now that I started playing with makeup. The last thing you want is to use makeup that contains harsh ingredients. My skin is already sensitive, so I’ve been careful when choosing products for my beauty routine.
I wanted to make a post about my favorite cruelty-free and vegan lipsticks. These beauty brands are also black-owned and keep women of color in mind when creating cosmetics which is always a plus for me!
Cruelty-Free and Vegan Lipsticks
Make sure you check out the first makeup video I posted on Instagram here. I wore all of the shades mentioned in this post. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any good selfies for “Playmate” or “Icon”, however, you can see how those shades looked on my complexion in the video!
The Lip Bar
I found out about The Lip Bar a few months ago and loved the variety of lipsticks and shades they offered. Of course, they sell cruelty-free and vegan lipsticks! The owner started her brand because she noticed the media was telling women that beauty looked a certain way. She was determined to change the way people think about beauty and show there is no standard.
Knowing her backstory pushed me to finally try the lipsticks and here are my favorite shades I’ve tried so far:
My first favorite cruelty-free and vegan lipstick from The Lip Bar is called Prima Donna. This color matches my complexion well and would be perfect to wear for a girl’s night out! It’s a purple-ish color and comes as Liquid Matte. I love using Matte lipsticks because the colors are vibrant and long-lasting. Whenever I wear this, I don’t have an issue with the color transferring and it feels comfortable on my lips for hours.
Before we go any further, I want to let you know that Matte Lipsticks really aren’t bad! I know some women don’t like this type of lipstick because it can be drying or uncomfortable. What I like to do is apply a moisturizing lip balm before using my matte lipsticks.
Doing this will ensure your lips stay moisturized throughout the day. You can have confidence knowing your lippie will stay on, remain vibrant, and won’t cause any discomfort.
This color caught my attention because I love pink! Playmate isn’t too bright or too dark and I love how it looks on my complexion. I appreciate that she created this with the right amount of color so it can look bomb on everyone’s skin tone.
It’s always nice when a makeup brand keeps women of color in mind when creating their products—especially since it can be difficult for us to find the perfect shade.
Playmate also comes in liquid matte and is long-lasting. This color reminds me of a bubbly-type, playful personality. I believe you can wear this at any time of the day whether you’re going out for brunch or going to a gathering in the evening. Playmate will bring your entire look together!

The Lip Bar recently launched their Max Matte Lipsticks and Icon was the bold color that caught my attention. It was out of my comfort zone, however, I ended up falling in love with it as I continued to wear it. I love how neat the packaging is and it’s very easy to apply—the color payoff is beautiful and vibrant!
I would wear Icon during a night out although it looks perfect for any time of the day. Wearing this will give you that boost of confidence you’re looking for, and as they say on the website, “it makes a huge statement without saying a word.”
The name of this lipstick fits very well. Red lipsticks have to be my number one favorite no matter which brand I get it from. I won Hot Mama in a giveaway and I was excited to try it. Let’s just say, it didn’t disappoint!
Hot Mama is a fire-engine red color, I love that it’s not too bright, the shade is just right. On the website it says this lippie will “set your lips ablaze and bring all the heat to your makeup looks, day and night.” Just from reading that description, why wouldn’t you want to wear it?
The lipsticks from this brand have exceeded my expectations. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the rest of the shades they offer; Whichever shade you get, I can say you’ll truly love it. If you don’t want to order them online, you can see if your local Target carries some of these shades!
The founder of Coloured Raine wanted to create a cosmetic line that encouraged self-expression, diversity and included shades for women of color. She pursued her passion and launched a collection of long-lasting liquid lipsticks with the perfect shades. The lipsticks are also cruelty-free, vegan, paraben-free, and gluten-free. Make sure you check out the variety of makeup products that she creates here.
I found this brand through Instagram not too long ago and decided to purchase a lipstick from them. Here is the one I bought and it has quickly become one of my favorites.
The Roulette lipstick is a dark rogue liquid lipstick with purple undertones. This lippie caught my attention fast and I actually love darker shades for my complexion! It’s easy to apply and does last throughout the day. Even if you eat or drink something, the lipstick stays in place and you won’t have to worry about reapplying it.
Roulette is also a matte lipstick and I’m glad it doesn’t leave my lips feeling uncomfortable. It goes easily with any look you put together! Since Fall is around the corner, I know this would be the perfect shade to continue wearing when I go out. I can’t wait to try more of the shades they offer!
If you haven’t tried lipstick before, I encourage you to start off with one of these brands. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and try something different! Since many brands don’t have a wide range of shades for women of color, shopping with women who look like you is the best option.
Have you tried any of these lipsticks before? What is your favorite shade?
