If you do your research on how to start creat1ing a skincare routine, you’ll find a ton of information on what the best regimen is and which products to use. This can become overwhelming, especially if you’re a beginner and aren’t sure where to start.
Your skincare routine doesn’t have to include a lot of steps or become difficult to keep up with. You want to keep it as simple as possible.
I put together five tips to follow when creating a skincare routine. There are certain things you should take into consideration before starting one, and following these tips will set you on the right path.
If you want to know which steps I have in my skincare routine, check out the following post: How to Build an Effective Skincare Routine.
Know Your Skin Type
It’s important to know your skin type before creating a skincare routine. You need to find out what you should use and/or avoid based on your skin type so you can achieve healthier skin.
There are four different categories:

You want to know the characteristics of each one and pay attention to how your skin reacts in certain situations. Here are some characteristics of each skin type:
- Normal skin has the right balance of moisture, even skin tone, and smaller pores.
- Combination skin has two different skin types. One part of your face may be dry while another part is oily.
- Dry skin doesn’t produce enough oil to protect the outer layer of skin and lock in moisture. Your skin may also feel tight and flaky.
- Oily skin has excess sebum secreted by the glands underneath the facial skin. Your skin may tend to look and feel oily even after cleansing.
Keep It Simple
It’s best to keep your skincare routine as simple as possible and only use products that are necessary for your skin. If you include too many steps and have a bunch of products, you’re more than likely not going to remain consistent with it. Also, using a lot of different products may lead to irritation and you won’t achieve the results you’re looking for.
Honestly, it shouldn’t take you any more than 10 minutes to do your routine (unless you’re doing a facial mask).
I can’t tell you which products to purchase, however, here are some steps to include in your regimen and how often to do them.
- Cleanser (twice a day)
- Exfoliant (2-3 times per week or less)
- Toner (twice a day)
- Facial Mask (1-2 times per week)
- Moisturizer (twice a day)
- Sunscreen (every morning)
Keep it at the minimum and focus on using the same products consistently. Also, remember that expensive doesn’t mean better. There are affordable skin care products that will work amazing for your skin. However, it’ll take some trial and error to find what’s best.

Find a Good-Quality Sunscreen
Sunscreen is one product that should be a priority in your morning skincare routine. Even if your other skin care products contain SPF, it’s still good to have another layer of protection.
Wearing sunscreen protects your skin from the damaging effects of the sun. It can also slow the development of wrinkles, premature aging, and prevent brown spots from appearing on your skin. Overall, wearing sunscreen consistently will ensure you maintain healthier skin.
There are many options to choose from, however, any sunscreen with an SPF of 30 is good enough for your skin. You would apply this on your skin after your moisturizer every morning.
Choose Natural Ingredients
I never paid attention to the ingredient list when shopping for skincare products. If I saw someone recommend a product and it claimed to treat a certain concern, I had to have it. The only problem with this is a lot of products contain chemicals and other ingredients that can cause irritation.
Your body absorbs what you put on your skin, so you want to choose products that contain all-natural ingredients. They usually contain nourishing ingredients that your skin will love.
This is the best way to go if you want to promote the overall appearance of your skin and address your concerns such as acne, hyperpigmentation, and other blemishes.
Consistency is key when creating a skincare routine. The best thing you can do for your skin is to have steps to follow every morning and evening. Remaining consistent will ensure you start to see progress and achieve healthy, clear skin.
I know it’s not easy to always stay consistent, we all have our days where we don’t want to do anything. However, you don’t want to forget about your routine and end up back at square one.
Develop a good habit of taking care of your skin every
These five tips will ensure you create a skincare routine that is suitable for you and your skin type. A basic routine is what you should stick with, it doesn’t need unnecessary steps. Don’t forget to stay consistent and continue to be patient as you treat your skin concerns.
