Creating a Skincare Routine:
Know Your Skin Type
It’s important to know your skin type before creating a skincare routine. You need to find out what you should use and/or avoid based on your skin type so you can achieve healthier skin.
There are four different categories:
- Normal
- Combination
- Dry
- Oily
You want to know the characteristics of each one and pay attention to how your skin reacts in certain situations. Here are some characteristics of each skin type:
- Normal skin has the right balance of moisture, even skin tone, and smaller pores.
- Combination skin has two different types. One part of your face may be dry while another is oily.
- Dry skin doesn’t produce enough oil to protect the outer layer of skin and lock in moisture. Your skin may feel tight and flaky.
- Oily skin has excess sebum secreted by the glands underneath the facial skin. Your skin may tend to look and feel oily even after cleansing.

Keep It Simple
It’s best to keep your skincare routine as simple as possible and only use products that are necessary for your skin. If you include too many steps and products, you’re more than likely not going to remain consistent with it. Also, using a lot of different products may lead to irritation and you won’t achieve the results you’re looking for.
Honestly, it shouldn’t take you any more than 10 minutes to do your routine (unless you’re doing a facial mask). I can’t tell you which products to purchase, however, here are some steps to include in your regimen and how often to do them.
- Cleanser (twice daily)
- Exfoliant (2-3 times per week)
- Toner (twice daily)
- Facial Mask (1-2 times per week)
- Moisturizer (twice daily)
- Sunscreen (every morning)

Use Sunscreen

Sunscreen should be a priority in your morning routine. Even if your other skincare products contain SPF, it’s still good to add another layer of protection.
Wearing sunscreen protects your skin from the damaging effects of the sun. It can also slow the development of wrinkles and prevent brown spots.
Overall, wearing sunscreen consistently will ensure you maintain healthier skin. You apply it after your moisturizer every morning.
One of my favorites is from a brand called Black Girl Sunscreen. I love how easily this absorbs into my skin and it doesn’t leave you feeling or looking greasy. It’s formulated with all-natural ingredients and can double as a moisturizer.
Use Natural Ingredients
I never paid attention to the ingredient list when shopping for skincare products until I started taking my routine seriously.
If I saw someone recommend a product and it claimed to treat a concern, I had to have it. The only problem with this is a lot of products contain chemicals and ingredients that can cause irritation.
Your body absorbs what you put on your skin, therefore, you want to choose products that contain all-natural ingredients.

Stay Consistent
Consistency is key when creating a skincare routine. The best thing you can do is to have steps to follow every morning and evening.
Staying consistent will help you achieve healthier, clear skin. I know it’s not easy to stay consistent, we all have our days where we don’t want to do anything. However, you don’t want to forget about your routine and end up back at square one.
Develop a good habit of taking care of your skin every
Following these tips will help you create a routine that is suitable for you and your skin type.
A basic routine is what you should stick with, it doesn’t need unnecessary steps. Don’t forget to be patient as you treat your skin concerns.

Great post sis! I agree with all of these tips. I have actually taken all of this into consideration myself while building my routine. It took me a lot of time, energy, and research! But it was worth it in the end. A great, personalized routine, can really make or break your skin. I used to think I suffered from acne – but was just using all the wrong products the wrong way. Here we are about 2-3 years later with basically my same routine.
Thank you for reading sis! I’m glad that you have a set skincare routine that’s working for you now. Consistency is key, especially when it comes to the products you choose to use! Thanks for sharing!
Yass Maddy!
Thank you for sharing this.
I recently (like yesterday) switched my skincare routine and I still have a lot to learn.
I’m glad you shared a simple skin care routine, that even my lazy behind can follow.
Lol awe don’t call yourself lazy! Trust me, we all have our moments where we don’t feel like messing with our skin, I know I still do. I’m glad this helped you! I’ll share my updated skin care routine soon and hopefully that will help guide you even more.
