You have a long day ahead and know that you need your makeup to be on point, what steps would you take to achieve that?
Let’s just say, you can be an expert with makeup and applying your products, however, none of those skills matter if you’re not taking care of the foundation of your makeup look — no I’m not talking about the product, I’m talking about your skin!
If your skin isn’t taken care of, you can’t expect to achieve a flawless makeup application. It’s important to have a skincare routine in place that’ll help you apply smooth makeup that’s long-lasting.
In this post, I’m sharing tips to follow in your morning routine to achieve flawless makeup.

Steps Before Applying Makeup:
Wash Your Face
Before you apply anything to your face, you want to make sure you use a gentle cleanser to remove any dirt and/or excess oil that may have accumulated on your skin throughout the night.
You want to choose a cleanser based on your skin type. Since I have dry, sensitive skin, I look for cleansers that are non-stripping with soothing ingredients.
You don’t want to apply your makeup on dirty skin — always start off with a clean slate.
One of my favorite cleansers is the Whipped Cleansing Cream from Skin & Co. This will leave your face soft and moisturized. I highly recommend trying this brand!

Use a Toner
Using the right toner can help balance the pH of your skin, provide moisture, and remove dirt that your cleanser missed. Sometimes your cleanser won’t remove everything and you may have residue left behind.
There are many different toners to choose from. I’d recommend purchasing one that is alcohol-free since that can be drying to the skin. Here are two of my favorites:
If you leave behind dirt on your skin, you can’t expect to achieve flawless makeup. This is why a toner is important for your routine!
You can either spray it directly on your face or apply it by using a cotton round. I love using the Organyc cotton rounds! You don’t have to worry about them ripping apart, they’re affordable, and gentle for sensitive skin.
Moisturize Your Face
In my morning routine, I usually don’t apply a thick moisturizer, I save those for nighttime.
Using the Argan Oil from Josie Maran has worked perfectly for my skin. I love that it’s lightweight and I never have to reapply it throughout the day. Following up with a moisturizer after finishing your routine will ensure the products you applied beforehand are locked in.
If you feel that your skin needs an extra boost of moisture, you can also use serums before applying your moisturizer. Serums are concentrated treatments that target specific skin concerns such as hyperpigmentation and anti-aging.
For your morning routine, I’d recommend using a serum that is formulated with antioxidants and nourishing ingredients.
It’s important to apply sunscreen as your final step. You want to protect your skin from the sun so that your skin concerns don’t become worse.
One of my favorite sunscreens is Black Girl Sunscreen. I love that it can double as a moisturizer and is formulated with clean ingredients. I was excited to find a sunscreen that was created with my skin tone in mind!
With this sunscreen, you don’t have to worry about a white cast after applying it. It absorbs quickly without leaving your skin greasy.
Apply Your Primer
The last step to achieving flawless makeup is applying your primer. A primer preps your skin for your makeup and helps it apply smoothly.
Thanks to my monthly subscription from BoxyCharm, I received the No Poreblem Primer from Touch in Sol. It goes on smoothly and absorbs easily. Since my skin is dry, I’d rather stick to creamy or liquid primers like this one so I can have extra moisture.
You should apply your primer to your entire face using your fingers. Once you do that, you’re all set!
After following these tips in your morning routine, you’ll be able to achieve flawless makeup quickly and easily. You can have confidence that your makeup will be long-lasting and continue to remain smooth throughout your day.
Having a skincare routine in place is important and can either make or break your makeup routine.
These are really good tips. I’m always using a toner, I’ve noticed that it really does help balance my skin.
Thank you sis! Yes, a toner is a must-have and has so many benefits. I’m glad you’ve noticed that!
Great post Madisen! I’m out here trying to find a good moisturizer too. I use rose hip seed oil at night, which my skin LOVES. But daytime moisture is a struggle for me. I also don’t wear any makeup to work, but I’m doing mascara in 2020! It’s a teeny pick me up.
Thank you so much! I’ve actually started using the Rosehip Oil again after seeing your blog post about it and I love it. I also want to wear more mascara this year haha and learn how to apply some lashes!
Grear read I have to get me some face primer
Thank you so much! And yes, it’ll make your makeup look and feel so much better. It makes a difference.
I need to start using sunscreen! But yes, toner and primer are a MUST for me 👏🏾
Yes, sis! Please get some sunscreen lol. Once I realized how important it was, I had to stay on top of it and it has made a difference in my routine.
