You have a long day ahead and know that you need your makeup to be on point, what steps would you take to achieve that? Let’s just say, you can be an expert with makeup and applying your products, however, none of those skills matter if you’re not taking care of the foundation of your makeup look — no I’m not talking about the product, I’m talking about your skin!

If your skin isn’t taken care of, you can’t expect to achieve a flawless makeup application. It’s important to have a routine in place that’ll make sure your makeup applies smoothly and lasts long.

In this post, I’m going to be sharing tips to follow in your routine so you can achieve flawless makeup. These steps have worked for me when I decide to wear makeup and I’ll continue to follow this consistently.

Steps Before Applying Makeup

Wash Your Face

Washing your face will give you a clean slate for a flawless makeup application.

Before you apply anything to your face in the morning, you want to make sure you use a gentle cleanser to remove any dirt and/or excess oil that may have accumulated on your skin throughout the night. Even though you may have done a deep cleanse the night before, it’s still important to wash your face in the morning.

You want to choose a cleanser based on your skin type. Since I have dry, sensitive skin, I look for cleansers that are non-stripping with soothing ingredients.

You don’t want to apply your makeup on dirty skin — always start off with a clean slate.

Use a Toner

Every time I talk about toners, many people don’t know the purpose of them or feel like they’re an unnecessary step. However, this is probably one of the most important products in your routine!

Using the right toner can help balance the pH of your skin, provide moisture, and remove any dirt that your cleanser may have missed. Sometimes your cleanser won’t remove everything and you may have residue left behind, using your toner will make sure your skin is free from dirt/oil.

There are many different toners to choose from. I’d recommend purchasing one that is alcohol-free since that can be drying to the skin. You can find some of my favorite toners below:

Just think about it, if you leave behind dirt on your skin, you can’t expect to achieve flawless makeup. This is why a toner is important for your routine! You can either spray it directly on your face or spray it on a cotton round and wipe your face. I love using the Organyc cotton rounds! You don’t have to worry about them ripping apart, they’re affordable, and gentle for sensitive skin.

Moisturize Your Face

Finding a good quality moisturizer is important before applying your makeup.

I’ve always struggled with finding a good moisturizer that’ll provide long-lasting hydration without leaving my face greasy. Depending on your skin type, there are a variety of moisturizers to choose from.

In my morning routine, I usually don’t apply a thick moisturizer, I save those for nighttime. Using Argan Oil has worked perfectly for my skin. I love that it’s lightweight and I never have to reapply it throughout the day. Following up with a moisturizer after finishing your routine will ensure the products you applied beforehand are locked in.

If you feel that your skin needs an extra boost of moisture, you can also use serums before applying your moisturizer. Serums are concentrated treatments that target specific skin concerns such as hyperpigmentation and anti-aging. For your morning routine, I’d recommend using a serum that is formulated with antioxidants and nourishing ingredients.

Apply Sunscreen

Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30.

It’s important to apply sunscreen as your final step. To be honest, I went years without wearing sunscreen because I thought black people didn’t need it. Yep, I was that person! Once I decided to start taking better care of my skin and did research, I realized how important wearing sunscreen is. You want to protect your skin from the sun so that your skin concerns don’t become worse.

One of my favorite sunscreens is Black Girl Sunscreen. I love that it can double as a moisturizer and is all-natural. I was excited to find a sunscreen that was created with my skin tone in mind!

With this sunscreen, you don’t have to worry about a white cast after applying it. It absorbs quickly without leaving your skin greasy. If you haven’t tried this yet, make sure you check out their website or your local Target!

Apply Your Primer

The last step to achieving flawless makeup is applying your primer. A primer preps your skin for your makeup and helps it apply smoothly. There are many primers to choose from, it can become overwhelming trying to find the best one.

Thanks to my monthly subscription that I receive from BoxyCharm, I received the No Poreblem Prime Essence from Touch in Sol. It goes on smoothly and absorbs easily. Since my skin is dry, I’d rather stick to creamy or liquid primers like this one so I can have extra moisture.

You should apply your primer to your entire face using your fingers. Once you do that, you’re all set!

After following these tips in your morning routine, you’ll be able to achieve flawless makeup quick and easy. You can have confidence that your makeup will be long-lasting and continue to remain smooth throughout your day.

Having a skincare routine in place is important and can either make or break your makeup routine. If you want your makeup to look good, you have to make sure you take care of your skin first.

Great post Madisen! I’m out here trying to find a good moisturizer too. I use rose hip seed oil at night, which my skin LOVES. But daytime moisture is a struggle for me. I also don’t wear any makeup to work, but I’m doing mascara in 2020! It’s a teeny pick me up.
